Okay, not a fitness review, but I had so many friends ask me about our experience, I thought I’d write about it. We went “glamping” for fathers day weekend at Under Canvas just outside Moab. It was a good experience overall, but there are a few things I’d like to point out like June is probably not the best time to visit. Although beautiful, it was pretty hot. Spring and fall would probably be ideal to go “glamping” at this location. Also, without doing a lot of research, we quickly realized bringing a dog with you limits what activities you can participate in. For example, National Parks, like the Arches do not allow dogs to be outside and hiking on the trails, so if you are with a dog, you will have to view the arches from the car. We did this on a Sunday before leaving Moab. The park is an absolute must-see, even if from the car.
Even though we had dogs, there were some great adventures we went on that were dog friendly. I recommend driving to Dead Horse Point State Park. The park has several overlooks that are majestic. The canyon is known for the last scene in Thelma and Louise because that scene was filmed there. Dogs are allowed in the park and you get to see some stunning views without having to hike. If you are wanting to hike, Mill Creek North Fork Trailhead is perfect! You do not have to hike in too far to get to a river that is both dog and people friendly. Also not as popular as Grandstaff Canyon Trail so less people. Our group had a great time wading and playing in the river. Again the views were amazing and it was a great way to cool off in the heat of the day.
Despite the heat, the accommodations were quite pleasant. The tents had misters that kept your room cool during the day and fans at night. I was not hot sleeping. The bathrooms in each room were modern and clean. Taking showers each day was a must and it was nice that each tent has its own private bathroom. If you plan on bringing kids, upgrade to a suite room. Each suite has its own private teepee where the kids can sleep making the experience even more cool. Also, the stargazer tent is a great option because above your bed is a clear canopy where you can look out at night and gaze at the stars. There is a bump-out in the tent for your bed to sit under the clear canopy so this provides more room.
The facilities were excellent. Everything was clean and well kept. The grilling areas and campfire pit were well thought out and we had access to things like utensils, plates and snacks. Also, endless S’mores at night was a fun feature. If you are planning on grilling, bring all your grill tools and since COVID, you must bring all your own food. They do offer coffee service in the morning that can be delivered to your tent and served in the main reception tent all day. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They will provide tons of information on activities that are right for your party and Under Canvas offers a slew of activities that you can book privately through them.
